From these studies, we can see that if we want to promote civic engagement in youth from disadvantaged circumstances, we must provide them with meaningful opportunities to serve and these opportunities should differ from traditional community service programs whose goal is to promote charity and altruism. Instead, they should focus on developing the critical thinking skills needed to succeed in marginalized communities. The following research questions guided the development of this study:1.How do youths define their community?
